Tewkesbury Abbey Choristers Pay Their Way!

Tewkesbury Abbey Choristers have been busy fundraising for their summer tour to France.

The boys, who are at Dean Close Preparatory School, have spent the last few weeks collecting unwanted clothes and soft toys to help raise money for their Summer Tour. The charity Bags2School collected 560kg of textiles and clothes, raising £224 towards the boys’ tour.

Other fundraising activities include ‘collecting coppers for choristers’ over the next few weeks and the boys doing a 12 mile sponsored walk from Dean Close Preparatory School to Tewkesbury Abbey, where they sing Evensong four times a week.

Tom Elwes, aged 11 said, “It was quite a hot day and a very long way, and we had to drink lots of water to keep us going! I really enjoyed the walk. It took over 4 hours but I felt a real sense of achievement when we all reached the Abbey. We ended raising over £2000  towards our tour, so everyone was thrilled!”

The tour takes place from 6-10 July, when 17 boys aged between 8-13 will travel to Bordeaux Cathedral and Moissac Abbey.  Here the Choristers will perform two concerts of  Anglican choral music including works by Weelkes, Gibbons, Britten, Stanford and Tippett.

Director of Choral Music and Organist, Simon Bell said, “We take the Choristers on tour every other year, the year before last we visited the Netherlands – which the boys thoroughly enjoyed. It is admirable that they wish to raise funds to contribute towards the cost of the trip and raise the profile of Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum.
