Wells’ girls are ‘Editor’s Choice’
The Song of the Stars, recorded by Wells Cathedral School Choralia, conducted by Christopher Finch, is one of Martin Cullingford’s pick of the finest recordings in this month’s Gramophone magazine. He says: “High praise for high voices are due to the girls of Wells Cathedral, one of the UK’s leading champions of choral music and of girls voices within it.”
The Song of Stars (Chilcott) is just one of a collection of music by 20th and 21st century composers including Holst, Tarik O’Reagan and John Taverner, sung by the 24 girls who make up Choralia. Nearly half were choristers at Wells, Salisbury or Exeter Cathedrals.
“It’s impossible to express too emphatically just how good the girls of Wells Cathedral School Choralia sound on this new collection of music for upper voices” says critic Alexandra Coghlan. Read her glowing review in Gramophone Awards 2015 and purchase! It’s on the Naxos Label 8 573427.
